Many blame the old nutrition pyramid for the current adult and child obesity epidemic, and they are looking forward to the US Department of Agriculture revising the nutrition pyramid. They may be disappointed to find that not much has changed in the actual dietary guidelines that make up the pyramid. Instead, most of the changes are in the way the guidelines are laid out, making them easier to understand so people can actually follow them and learn to make healthier choices.

The old food pyramid

What happened to the old food pyramid, introduced in 1992?

Although the old food pyramid seems simple, many people misunderstand the range in servings for each food group. So when the old food pyramid recommended six to eleven servings in the Bread Group, most people thought they could eat up to eleven servings as part of a healthy diet. However, how many servings they should eat is determined by their activity level and calorie needs. For example, sedentary women and some older adults following the 1600-calorie diet are said to eat only six servings from the grain group, while more active people following the 2,800-calorie diet may eat 11 servings.

Another big problem is that many people don’t understand what servings really are. One serving is not what you can eat in one meal. So when you eat a sandwich with two slices of bread, that counts as two servings from the Grains, not just one.

Also, the old food pyramid is not enough to educate people about the importance of whole grains. This causes people not only to overeat from the Bread Group, but also to eat the wrong grains, such as refined grains in white bread.

One big problem with the old nutrition pyramid was that too many people didn’t follow its recommendations. The diet focuses on foods like bread and pasta, which seem to be the most important part of the food pyramid, but few people move up the pyramid and eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. New food pyramid

On the surface, the new food pyramid, introduced in 2005, doesn’t seem any easier to understand than the old one. While still a pyramid, the portions of each food group are shown in color and you must rely on additional explanation to understand how many servings you should eat from each food group.

Only the food pyramid doesn’t talk about portions anymore. Instead, the recommended daily ‘amount’ from each group is stated as ounces (for grains and meats) or cups (for vegetables, fruit and dairy). That makes sense for things like dairy, but do you know how many cups of fruit and vegetables you typically eat each day? Or how many apples are in a cup? Or how many salads? Do you know how many slices of bread make up an ounce?

To help clear up any confusion you may have about servings and the amount of food in a cup or ounce, you must also use additional educational resources for the new food pyramid. These tips and resources for each food group provide detailed examples of what counts as a cup or ounce. For example, a fruit cup might include one small apple, one large banana, or 32 seedless grapes. Or an ounce of cereal would be equivalent to a slice of bread or half a cup of cooked pasta.

Your Food Pyramid

Another big change in the new nutrition pyramid is that it’s made interactive so you can personalize it based on a person’s age and activity level. This is important because how much you eat from each food group in the food pyramid will greatly depend on your daily calorie needs, which can range from a two-year-old’s 1000 calories to as much as 3200. calories of a very active eighteen-year-old boy.
